Why Were We Spared?

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” –Lamentations 3:22-23 KJV

Carry On

As in times past, we have quickly come to the end of another year
But this one is different; 2020 was something of a year
That in the same breath that one could say:
“I can’t believe the year is over already”,
One could also easily say:
“I am so glad it’s over” or I can’t wait for this year to be over.”

2020 is one of those years we want to put behind us quickly
And it is a year that has also taught us many lessons
Covid-19 (aka Coronavirus) took the world by storm
And shook us to our core
Unprepared, we dashed around like mad
Donned masks and cleaned out all the stores

Like so many before, George Floyd was killed by a police officer
But this time was different because of how it happened
It happened while the world watched on
Horrified, helpless, but keenly aware
And many more innocent men and women were killed this year
So much so that it sparked a revival of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement

2020 reminded us all that life is short
And that life is not fair
As it claimed many more lives than the year before
The virus of racism was always there
One to which we’ve adapted and dealt with year after year

But Coronavirus was a devil we didn’t know
That intercepted our plans
Changed the way we lived and moved
And wreaked havoc in our land
Many people were taken and others were left
Which gives us reason to pause and think
Why were we spared?
Why were we left?
Have you ever thought about it like that?

You and I have been spared
Not because we are so special or any better than those who were taken
We have been spared because our work here is yet undone
Our purposes have not yet been fulfilled
And we have been given more time

Time to get our hearts right with God
Time to live, love and forgive
Time to turn over a new leaf and to get our lives in order
Time to complete our missions here on earth
Time to make a difference in this world

So like good soldiers on the battlefield of life
Let us march on until our very last fight
Let us make the most of the time we have left
However long or short that may be

Since we do not know the day nor the hour
When our Lord will come calling for you or for me
Let us be grateful for the chance and the honor to serve
Let us carry on to do our Master’s will on this earth

Happy New Year and May God Bless You in 2021!
